Well, the reason for the rebuild is fairly self evident, its all gone manky! The rust on the discs is because my garage roof leeks ( more jobs! ) but the steering has gotten mega heavy so theres diffinately something wrong.
Releasing the springs was far less scary than i thought, theyre not really under a lot of tention when the cars off the ground so a jack underneath and then gently lowering it, ment i didnt kill myself.
Quick blast with the angle grinder and wire brush attatchment and theyre ready for painting.
Even with a car this small the workspace is cramped, oneday im gonna have a barn to work in... just need to win the lottery first.
Top end free from the damper
All looks good, shouldnt have to replace too much
Tie the brake caliper up out of the way so its not dangling by its brake pipe
Inner wishbone end comes away easy too, excellent. On the other hand.... bugger, the grease nipple and plug on the end of the fulcrum pin are missing, at guess id say that will be rusted solid.
Yup i was right, solid. So off i trot to the garage and leave it with Dan, who promises to heat it up and try to free it. Much naging and some months later and we attack it with a welding torch to try and get the heat into it, unfortunately the braising on the lower wishbone melts through and still the fulcrum pin wont budge. ( New lower wishbone pan methinks, see below )
Three wheels on my wagon.. la la la
Free at last, well sort of, now i cant budge the steering arm or the disc guard. However some new tools make quick work of that and its painting time. Notice nice shiny steering rack painted up in the background with nice new track rod ends.
Notice the bit the fulcrum pin should screw into is missing from the wishbone... bugger, one quick trip to Cox and Perry later and we have a shiny new one all on exhcnage, splendid.
Wow! for the first time in 6 months stuff is going back together and its all nice and shiny ;o)
Ok so the parts are just laying next to each other, but hopefully this weekend theyll be greased up and make it back onto the car. 1 side done!
